the prompt was "gouge" which i guess probably reminded me of the pixies' "gouge away," but consciously i skipped right over that association and to the half-step pitch-bend thing that joey santiago does with his guitar in songs like "dead" which is really what "gouge" sounds like to me.
the actual beat here took me 95% of the time to record because of my inability to play to a tempo, but it was really just an excuse to make some atrocious guitar noises over it. those i did in two takes.
one trick i've found for recording on beat is to record a couple bars of drums and hard-quantize and loop them, just to have something stable and more substantial than the metronome to follow along with. i did that with the drums here, then recorded the bass over it, and then re-did the drums with no quantization.
