Day 14 - "Undeliverable"

about

can i fit an indie rock song in 46 seconds? sure! sort of!

i had to do a 3-over-2 drum beat in this, the only semi-fancy drum pattern i know how to do. the lyrics come from a recent experience which was weirdly appropriate to this prompt.

so recently i scraped the tumblr blog "blessing all the birds" allthebirds.tumblr.com which is a feminist look at joanna newsom and her songs with a lot of really insightful analysis of her incredibly dense and literary lyrics, and converted it to an ebook because i wanted to be able to read it away from the internet. and then i figured, maybe the blog authors would be interested in it! so i sent them a message asking if they wanted it. they said they would love to look at it and gave me an email to send it to. so i sent it, and the email bounced!

so i figured... well, i'm just a internet rando and they are women who write about feminism online. maybe they're wary about giving out an actual email address to people like me and they use a fake one to dissuade people who might just end up sending abuse. and i couldn't blame them!

but: it turned out i had just misread the email address. oops!

but for the few hours between the email bouncing and my figuring out my error, i did a lot of spinning on that undeliverable message. and so when i saw the prompt, i figured i had to try to turn that spinning into a song.

(in retrospect, my assumption that they'd intentionally sent me a fake email was not rational. why would they respond at all if they were going to do that? but this was just anxiety brain, imagining the most uncomfortable possible thing. of course it led down all kinds of exciting rabbit holes, like: what do i do next? message back and say "hey, my email bounced?" and if so should i also be like "if this was intentional, i get it, and i'll leave you alone?" and so forth. man... i'm glad i just misread the email address.)

lyrics

Fool me once, no shame on you
I wouldn't trust me just the same as you
The minute that I give my name to you
I'm suspicious

It's in the air and in the ground
In every word and every sound
So if you want to give me the runaround,
yeah, I really get it

The whole system's illegitimate
So if I write a message and I can't deliver it
